"To liberate broken men from their sin and addiction by the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ, equipping them to become prosperous disciples of Christ and establishing them as a positive influence in their communities."
Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
What is discipleship? A disciple is simply a “learner” or “follower”. The discipleship relationship is merely the relationship of a teacher and a learner. The world is going to be won for Christ, ultimately through the discipleship process, not by mass evangelization. Jesus focused the majority of His effort in His few short years of ministry on this earth imparting His life into the lives of twelve men. He has called us to do the same!
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Acts 1:8 "but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
2 Timothy 2:2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
The Content of Discipleship
Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you...
We are to impart the very life and teachings of Christ that we have received into the lives of others. This is more than just impartation of head knowledge. It is teaching the disciple obedience to the commands of Christ.
The Character of the Disciple
Matthew 20:26-28 “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
The Cost of Discipleship
Luke 14:26-33 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? “Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ “Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? “Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
